Aleks' blue gaze trailed up to his mother, who stood looking at him. Her rich, chocolate brown hair (which was cut and styled monthly) fell against her cheeks, sticking to her goopy lipgloss. "Thees ees vhere I leave you off, my dear," she said. "I talked to the therapist and he said eef you have any trouble at all, contact them. Your classes shouldn't be too bad, and you take care of Luka, ok?" She gabbed, her thick Russian accent predominant in the conversation. The soft i sound always sounded like a hard e with a Russian accent. "I'm not 8, mom. I'm 20 years old. I'll be fine." He waved his hand, as if to indicate that he could wave off his troubles, too. He drummed his fingers against his leg out of sheer habit and impatience, not because his ADD was getting the better of him. They had already been to the room, loaded Luka, been to see the guidance counsellor on campus, and talked to the on-campus medical staff about his drug of choice. Adderall.
Ah, Adderall. A highly addictive drug. A cocktail of a few amphetamines, all specifically tailored for ADHD patients. The drug Aleks was currently on. For some reason, he couldn't get the word out of his head. Aleks wasn't sure if he really liked being on drugs - of course, it dulled the constant buzz in his head and when it hit, he always found himself planning and listing and thinking correctly. But, he also felt he wasn't himself. He was still on the fence about his medication. However, at least for today, he knew it was necessary he take it. His first day at Windsor Academy, an elite riding school. It was altogether exciting and scary, therefore it was good he was on Adderall.
"Alright, bye my Aleksi." She was the only person, ever, to be allowed to call him Aleksi and not get murdered, "I veel call soon to check up on you, ok? Try to make friends." She stoked his cheek quickly, ruffled his hair like he was 8 again, and turned on her heel. And then she was gone. Finally! Really, Aleks should probably be ashamed to have such a public display of his mother's affection. He was a college kid, after all. But it didn't really affect Aleks. He had a history of his peers diapproving of him, so he was not really worried about their opinion. Now, for something to do. He looked around the barn, enjoying the bustle. It was loud. It was busy. It was everything he loved, plus Luka was there. He needed something to do. Just something. He looked around, dancing on the spot for a moment, and decided to take Luka out on the cross ties, and settled for curry the big bay gelding intensly.

Olivia was completely covered in dirt. Though, for some it isn't hard to believe. She does ride horses, after all. She had taken Sorry out in the arena an hour earlier to practise barrels, and they sure did have a time with that. Sorry was cooperating just fine. Olivia was trying to cut their time down and push him more and work on tightening their turns. She gave him plenty of breaks between running him and they walked the pattern a lot during the practise to let him catch his breath. She tried to move the barrels as much as she could when the dirt was getting loose. She ran him for the last time the hour, when he slid at the second barrel and Olivia got jostled off somehow in all the hubub. She did some kind of roll on the ground, and luckily didn't hurt herself, except probably for some bruises later.
Dirt was all over her jeans, her snap front western shirt she dug out of her drawer, and all over her hands and arms. Luckily, she was wearing her helmet as a safety precaution, but she didn't hit her head. She brushed most of it off her hands and collected Sorry from the other corner of the arena, stroking his neck as his breathing started to slow a little from the run and bustle. It's okay. she cooed to him. She quickly swung herself back on and they trotted through the pattern one last time before walking him out and exiting.
Walking back to the barn, she saw that a new horse was in the cross ties. She led Sorry to his stall and untacked him, but left the saddle and bridle on the floor of his stall to pick up later. She did lay the saddle pad out on her tack trunk to let it air out. Down the aisle she saw a new boy, that obviously went with the new horse. Olivia caught a look at his face her mouth made an O shape and then curled into a smile. Tall, dark and handsome. She bit her lip, but walked over anyhow. Hi. I'm Olivia. she greeted with an inviting smile. She definitely wanted to get to know him. She looked at his horse and found herself still smiling. She toned down her smile so she wasn't all creeper-y, she didn't want him to be scared away now. Um. Welcome to Winsor.

aleks carmichael ! [/font] just when you think that you're in control, just when you think that you've got a hold, just when you get on a roll, here it goes, here it goes, here it goes again !~ ok go.
The wonderful thing about Luka was that he was patient. In life, Aleks had always needed someone who was patient with him. Unfortunately, when he was younger, he didn't quite get that. Nobody understood the way his brain functioned when he was younger up until he was aabout 15 years old. So, most of the time, he recieved impatience, hostility and punishments for his behaviour. The problem was, he could not control his behaviour. No matter how many times his PlayStation was taken away, he was grounded or sent to his room, Aleks had no control over it. Patience was necessary when forming an organic relationship with him.
Luka, Aleks' wonderful big bay gelding, knew patience. That's why they worked. Aleks looked up at the horse, his bone structure thick and strong. Luka was bigger than most Thoroughbreds. He had a sturdy base and powerful muscles, enabling him to jump up to 5'-6'. He was amazingly talented. As Aleks' hands worked the curry in tight circles, following the grooves of Luka's body, a voice interrupted his work. It was a person! Aleks, although he was on Adderall, still had that friendly, people-person nature. He loved talking to people! For the second time today, he felt like he was 8 years old as he turned to the person.
She was pretty, in a curvy, tanned way. She looked of some ethnicity other than English. He liked that. She introduced herself to him, which made him even more happy. Of course, nobody knew that he had ADD at Windsor yet. The choice was his - did he want to come up front and just state he had ADD, or would he wait awhile and see if people caught on? In different situations, he had done different things. Of course, it largely depended if he was on drugs at the time of the meeting. One time, when he went to camp for a week when he was 16, he had not taken his medication and people had figured out reeeeeally quick that he had ADD. Well, mostly because he hadn't been able to finish a conversation and had bluntly told them all day.
In the end, Aleks chose easily. He would ride it out. If people noticed, well, people noticed. They would find out anyways soon or later. But for now, he would just try to be himself and let people take him or leave him. Of course, this statement must accompany the expression "it's easier said than done". He smiled at Olivia a big goofy smile and said, "Olivia! Cool. Can I call you Liv? I'm Aleks, with a 'k' and an 's' instead of 'x'. It's Russian." Unfortunately, even on Adderall, the blunt, overly friendly nature in which Aleks acted did not go away. He rethought his words for a second and realized the verbal assault might scare her a little. He added, "And this is Luka. How are you?" The question was slower, more patient. He couldn't be scaring all his friends away now, could he?

Olivia stood there for a moment, trying to take in everything that he threw at her. It was a lot all at once, and she wasn't sure how a person could have said so much, especially for a boy. Olivia knew that she could talk a mile a minute sometimes, especially when rambling in Spanish, but this didn't quite compare. She pressed her lips together and then let out a breath, giving him a small smile and let a sweet giggle slip out. His smile made him even more adorable, in a strange kind of way. Yeah, you can call me Liv. And I love the way your name's spelled. That's really cool. I'm half Spanish, if you didn't have that figured out already. she said with a one-shouldered shrug at the end. She looked at Luka and reached her hand out to the horse's nose so he could smell her and know she meant no harm.
Olivia already sort of enjoyed Aleks' company. And his horse. I'm well, thank you. Despite me being covered in dirt. My horse and I had an interesting workout this morning, and I'm gonna be feeling it tomorrow. And I'll probably be all sore and cranky until I find someone that plans on being a massuse she said with a bit of a chuckle, reflecting on her spill that now seemed silly when she looked back at it. She looked up at Aleks, he was much taller than she was, and gave him a smile. How do you like Windsor so far? she asked, stepping back and leaning against the stall door behind her so that Aleks could return to grooming Luka without her standing there in his way. Geez he's so tall. But he's a thoroughbred, am I right? I've been amazed at how tall they can be. she said with a childish smile on her face as she looked at the gigantic horse.
notes no, i think it sounds fine. besides, if it did come out scatterbrained, it would've suited him. lol.

There was a hesitant silence in which Olivia took everything in. This silence - Aleks had never, ever liked silence - made him itch. His fingers twitched a little as she surveyed him, probably judging him. The silence was killing him. He just wanted to shout and sing and bang on things to make it stop. But then her gaze softened, a smile broke. Instantly, his muscles relaxed. His tall, lanky, uncoordinated body felt the atmosphere between them melt, and the silence that had muffled his ears ceased. He sudden heard the bustle of the barn again, and he smiled back at her.
And then she talked. It was a miracle! She talked almost as much as him! It was cheery, happy talk. Something Aleks had always enjoyed about talking to someone was finding about them. The connection, when you actually talked to someone, was so much deeper. You saw the little, subtle emotions that went with their words, like the ways they winced at their friend's name or they smiled subconsciously to the sound of your voice. With all the modern technology nowadays, (Aleks was never good with technology) it was so easy to exchange information with someone without talking. And he hated it.
She finished telling him about her rather unplanned eventful ride on her horse. He peered at the half-Spanish girl that he had hastily dubbed Liv and her wide smile. It was a pretty smile. He felt like telling her that. "You have a pretty smile," he noted, in his usual I-say-whatever-enters-my-brain fashion. "Anyways," he continued, realizing he was sidetracked. "Let me know if you find a good masseuse. I've only been at Windsor for all of two hours, but so far everything seems good! The guidance counsellor and nurse here are both really nice, and Luka seems to love it." The nurse was also quite goodlooking, always a plus for someone on drugs.
"Yah, a Thoroughbred. He's got splendid -- I love the word splendid by the way, it's just so fun to say -- bloodlines. He has seriously saved my ass more times than I can count." Aleks babbled. His eye wandered curiously back to her, wondering what she was thinking. Did she think she was an bumbling fool? Probably. But at least he made good conversation..

Olivia wasn't sure what to say when he complimented her on her smile. Sure, she'd been told how nice it was and how pretty her teeth are, but she'd never been given an outright compliment about it. Stated so matter-of-factly like that, especially from a boy. Of course, she was still smiling like an idiot, but she didn't care. He would probably tell her if she started being annoying anyhow. She pursed her lips for a moment before replying with a little giggle. Oh, thank you.
She let Aleks ramble on, and note that he loved the word splendid. True, Olivia also had her favourite words, but she really only said they were her favourite to her best friends. This kid was pretty funny. Haha, that is a pretty good one. Though some of the time i prefer the word tremendous from time to time. She smiled again. Olivia knew how great it was to have a horse that you could depend on. Ooh, what events do you compete in? she asked. She sort of hoped a little on the inside that he competed in show jumping, so that she might get to see him at shows; and possibly even get to kick ass too.
Olivia thought about everything he'd rambled about so far. And the rambling bit sort of stuck with her. It was sort of like he had a short attention span. She cast a sideways glance at him for just a moment, pretty sure that he didn't notice it, but she could be wrong. Did he? Maybe he did. But what did it matter? Nah, you could have too short of an attention span and ride a horse, could you? Nah. She thought hard against it. Although, it wouldn't change her opinion of him any. She sort of liked him talking a lot, in a kind of way that she didn't know a word for. Olivia tucked her hands in her pockets and watched him as he talked still.

Aleks had caught Liv off guard with the compliment. He liked surprising people. It made things more interesting, and it reflected his nature. He was a surprising person - brutally honest, always happy, and the words that rolled out of his mouth... well, one would never expect that from him. Judging by his appearance alone, most people assumed he was some sort of quiet kid that was extremely introverted. Once in his lifetime, he had been. But after long years of therapy, he had learned that personal expression was key to surviving in this world. Without conveying emotions, thoughts, we would be lost.
Once he was done talking, it was her turn. She laughed, flashing that pretty smile again. "Oooh! Tremendous. It just rolls right off the tongue," he commented. Then he was asked a question. "Luka and I dominate Jumperland," he said. The 'dominate' part was maybe a stretch, but he was in the presence of a girl, and he was a guy, so a little exaggeration in order to impress her was expected. "What about you? Will I see you in the Jumper ring?" Speaking of, Aleks mentally put checking out the jumper ring at Windsor to his infinite list of to-dos. He had so much to do, and when he was on medication, it go done.
He noticed absent-mindedly as Liv began talking that they were awkwardly standing in the middle of the aisle, Luka dozing off on the cross ties. "Just a second," he said. He unclipped Luka's dark leather halter from the cross ties and led him into his stall. Aleks hadn't really had the intention of riding him, he had just taken Luka out to have something to do. He slid the wood and metal door down its track, locking it behind Luka. The massive bay gelding headed for the corner of his stall, where a small pile of hay was carelessly thrown. "So what do you kids do for fun around here? I'd love to see some of the campus." He said. He was new to the academy, and really wanted to see the places he could go and explore. The fact that he just met Olivia didn't make much of a difference.

Dominate? she questioned with a playful snicker. Puh-leeze. We all know that I dominate the jumper ring. she finished. She crossed her arms diva-like and shifted her weight onto one foot, looking Aleks up and down. She didn't mind the looking him up and down part, he was quite nice to look up and down. Olivia mentally giggled and then dropped her arms and took a friendly step closer to him. Kidding. I don't think I quite dominate the jumper ring, but everyone eats my dust when I barrel race.
It was true. Olivia spun the barrels right into the ground when she and Sorry were in there. As for show jumping, Olivia and Sorry didn't always dominate the ring. They had their occasional off-days for show jumping, and while they've won several blue ribbons, Olivia didn't think it really amounted to anything compared to how good they were at barrel racing. As Aleks put Luka back into his stall, Olivia remembered that she had left Sorry's tack out in his stall. She trotted down the aisle to Sorry's stall, which was only a few stalls away and opened the door. But it's possible you'll see me in the jumper ring. she called to him.
With Sorry's tie-down and bridle slung over her arm, and saddle in her arms, Olivia brought the tack from the stall and set it on the tack trunk in one smooth motion just like she'd been doing for years. Sorry slunk a little towards his open stall door and Olivia turned and glared at him while scolding Oi! Don't even think about it, mister! she flitted her arms in his direction and he backed into his stall before she called to Aleks again. I've really only been to the barn and class...And the library. Olivia swiftly shut the door and was back to Aleks' side in about five heartbeats. Olivia looked up at Aleks again and thought about what she did for fun. The only places that she had been to were the barn, her classrooms, and the library. She didn't really count the coffee shop cause she wasn't really in there for all that long, and she guessed it wasn't really considered 'fun.' She shrugged. Soo, you wanna go check out the town?! she asked with a smile. She'd heard about the mall, but she wasn't really a fan of that, and Aleks being a boy, Olivia figured he wouldn't be either. But she was up for anything.

He couldn't help but laugh as she tried to show him up. It wasn't in an unfriendly, I-am-so-much-better-than-you way, it was a playful, friendly showing up. "Pshhh, yeah sure," he said, laughing again. When she talked about the barrel racing world, his attention shifted from their little squabble to her words. "Barrel racing, really? I'd love to try that sometime! You have to show me how. Luka is actually trained in a whole bunch of things but I'm really only a jumper," he said, excited.
He waited while she put Sorry's tack away. She was quick, her movements smooth and calculated. Something Aleks had never been able to master. The concept of being unable to move in a fluid way seemed foreign to most people. But to the boy, it was a reality of his life. His coordination was mostly a product of his ADD. When he wasn't on his meds, he couldn't concentrate on finishing tasks so they ended up clumsy and destructive, a quality that never was accepted well. For now, he was trying to work on that coordination.
She was back by his side quickly, and he noted the height difference between them. He sort of liked towering over people. It made him feel slightly superior, when often he felt inferior because of his disorder. He looked down at her, at his new friend. He liked making friends, and so far, Olivia was a very good one. His mind strayed back to the debate whether to tell her or not he had ADD. Really, on medication, he seemed like a slightly strange but mostly normal person, so it was easy to mask it.
Her suggestion to check out the town got him excited again. "Yes! Yes I do. Let's not go to the library, okay? I hate libraries. Hmmm... where to go, where to go. What about a club or a bar or something? Maybe not a bar because I can't drink." He pondered aloud, hoping she would jump in sometime and suggest something. He was really new, so he had no clue what the town was like and what they had around. "Any suggestions?" He asked her.

Awesome, yeah, I'd love to show you how to barrel race. she said with a smile. Olivia pictured Aleks riding Sorry for a second, flying around the arena. She giggled to herself. That would be a sight to see. But she thought Aleks would look pretty smart riding Sorry. Olivia listened as Aleks rambled on. She pressed her lips together, trying to keep from smiling constantly. She had no idea what it was that made her smile. Maybe it was the fact that Aleks always seemed to be talking or doing something. Maybe it was because Olivia felt comfortable around him. Or maybe it was because he was just downright cute. Either way, she was trying to ration herself on smiling.
She laughed this time. Okay, no library, and no bars. Which is fine 'cause I'm not much for the drinking scene. Occasionally, but not very. she said. Olivia half-turned and slowly began walking down the stall aisle, hoping Aleks would get the idea to walk with her as the two of them tried to think of some place to go that would be interesting. Olivia looked up to the rafters of the barn as she thought about all the places to go. It wasn't easy, as she hadn't been out much herself. She turned to Aleks. I heard there's a tattoo place? We could check that out?? I've been wanting a tatto, but I don't know if I have th guts to get one. And I mean, I don't even know what I would get. I don't know how some people can get tattoos..especially in awkward places. That must be weird for them and the tattoo-er person... Aleks must be catching. Now Olivia was rambling.

Barrel racing. He liked the idea of it. He had never done it, but the idea of flying around a dirt ring on a horse probably a size too small for him (he was rather tall) and just letting go of the world for a moment to just GO. It was exceptional how well that sport would fit Aleks. He resolved to try it sometime, to drag Olivia out with her horse and make her teach him. He was not a persistent person, he simply didn't have the attention span for it, but it wouldn't be surprising if one night he spontaneously called her up and made her bring him out with Sorry.
His attention focused to her again. The question of where they were headed next hung in the air, tempting and mysterious. Aleks was always willing to explore, and the idea of exploring with someone new was particularly a fun idea. He looked at Olivia, her curly hair falling over her shoulders. She smiled like a madman, but Aleks didn't mind. Smiles were a good thing. They meant she wasn't completely scared off him. Also, she wasn't uncomfortable. That was something common among Aleks' aquaintances - some felt really uncomfortable. He just shared too much information.
Olivia suggested a tattoo parlour. A tattoo parlour! That was something Aleks had always wanted to do - get a tattoo. Unfortunately, he didn't quite have the attention span to sit that long and let someone painfully draw on him. However, he was on Adderall... and if he got something small... "Oooh! Rebellious! A tattoo!" He exclaimed. "I'd love to go. I'd love to get something, but with ADD, well, I can't sit for too long. But I think I'll be okay because I'm on drugs. Let's go!" Once he had finished his speech, he realized his flubb. He had told her.

Olivia chuckled when Aleks said how rebellious a tattoo would be. Indeed it would be. She wasn't sure how her mother would take that. She knew that if her dad were still around he probably wouldn't care much. But her mother, she might be a different case. Olivia had never really had a conversation about tattoos adn piercings and such things like that with her mother before. Olivia had gotten her ears pierced at a young age, but any thought of piercing her bellybutton or nose or whatever never occurred to her.
Then the thought of what to tattoo on herself came to mind. A horse? Nah, that seemed a little childish to her now. If she were a couple years younger she would've. She would never tattoo someone's name, because that was just stupid. Olivia remembered one of her cousins got some kind of mathmatical formula tattooed on their arm once. Why, she had no idea. Probably cause they're nerdy and have no other friends. Perhaps once they got to the tattoo parlor there would be something really cool there she could get tattooed. She patted her pocket to check for her wallet, and it was there. Excellent.
When Aleks made the comment about the ADD and being on drugs, Olivia wasn't quite sure if he was being serious about that or if it was a joke. If he was being serious, it didn't phase her much. She still thought he was pretty awesome. And adorable. Adorably awesome. She let out a laugh. Well let's go! Olivia grabbed him by the arm, unsure of why she did this, but it felt natural so she didn't let go. If he didn't want to be pulled through the barn, then he could pull out of her grasp, it wasn't a very tight one.
notes well, the tattoo parlor it is! c:
