PERSONALITY
Miles was never an easy horse to handle. Coming from a rougher home, he was nothing like a picture perfect selective breeding horse from an Oldenburg breeding facility. He was a "diamond in the rough" type horse. Unfortunately, without proper training, he can cause quite a scene. Generally, he's a good mount to ride. But he can be inpredictable, and suddenly decide he doesn't want to listen to leg or hand or seat. He'll ignore the rider and do his own thing. There's nothing viscious about him, however. He is easily distracted and usually when his mind wanders, he is hard to pull back to the task at hand. The unpredictable nature stems from his inability to concentrate - once his focus strays from his work, he comes back feeling resilient. He needs an experienced rider.
HISTORY
As state before, Miles is a sort of "diamond in the rough" horse. He was born at a fairly reputable breeder, but his mother and father were nothing spectacular which resulted in an average foal. This wouldn't have been a problem if the breeder's clients were looking for something to just hop on once in a while, not to do a little serious competition. As a foal, his personality was undesirable and he didn't get along with many other horses. He was seperated, and weaned from his dam, unable to be integrated into the bigger foal paddock at the breeder's. The lack of socialization between other horses caused him to dislike other horses in general. He was careful about his own space, and when he was backed, he could only be ridden in an inclosed arena alone because if he was outside, he would get distracted, and if he was with other horses, he would seek them out and try to bite them.
This seemingly 'mean' streak in him stemmed from his lack of socialization as a foal. To humans, however, he was very loving. They were his only company. But because he was such a touchy horse, he was auctioned off for cheap to an inexperienced trainer, who bought him as a 3-year old. The trainer didn't quite ruin Miles; however, he didn't do him any good. The newbie, so to speak, didn't recognize the source of Miles' problems and turned to harsh bits and tack that didn't solve the problem but merely subdued Miles. The pair was a disaster, and Miles was sold once again as a 5 year old after sitting in a pasture for a few months, deemed unsafe for riders.
Liza Cody bought Miles as an infuriating 5 year old with a vendetta against the world. She was much quieter and more patient than his previous trainer. Although Miles' personality and vices went uncured, his old owner had actually trained him a little. All he needed was a little cleaning up, some time and patience, and soon he developed into a content hunter with a passion for jumping. Liza wasn't the horse whisperer, for she had her fair share of problems with the gelding. With some help from various barns and trainers, she slowly worked at the knot that wound Miles and soon he was straightened out, for the most part. Social skills were built slowly, and soon he learned to enjoy the presence of other horses. He still has some problems, but he is much farther along than when he begun to be ridden.
DISCIPLINES
Mostly hunter, has done a bit of jumper and a bit of dressage, but not much.
